In most Nigerian states a local government is an administrative line drawn through a town. In Ekiti State it is usually the town itself, which quietly makes this one of the easiest states in the country to address. Codes open 36, run to 372109, and the Ado Ekiti head office code follows the national pattern…
Every landline area code in Nigeria now starts with 020. The old codes still exist inside the new ones, so Lagos went from 01 to 0201, Abuja went from 09 to 0209, Port Harcourt went from 084 to 02084 and Kano went from 064 to 02064. The change took effect in 2023 and the old…
The national postal plan starts at 100001 in Lagos and finishes in Benue State. Its codes open 97 and run to 982002, the highest numbers issued anywhere in the country, and 970001 is the Makurdi head office code for forms. Benue completes postal region 9 with the FCT, Niger, Plateau and Nasarawa. The state follows…
Eight local government areas, the fewest in Nigeria, and two dispatch blocks, also the fewest. Bayelsa State has the narrowest code range in the country, 560001 to 561102, for the simple reason that most of the state is water. 560001 is the Yenagoa head office code. That narrow range is not an oversight. Bayelsa has…
Yobe State is the only state in Nigeria with no fixed line primary centre of its own. It has a full set of postal codes regardless: they open 62, run to 632102, and 620001 is the Damaturu head office code that belongs on a form. Yobe sits in postal region 6 with Borno, Adamawa and…
Nigeria has two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Sukur Cultural Landscape in Adamawa, inscribed in 1999, and the Osun Osogbo Sacred Grove in Osun, inscribed in 2005. Not eleven, which is what a surprising number of Nigerian travel articles claim by counting the tentative list as though it were the real one. That is a…
Bauchi State runs two sorting centres rather than one, Bauchi for the south and Azare for the north, and both the postal and telephone systems recognise the split. State codes open 74, reach 752105, and 740001 is the Bauchi head office code. Bauchi is in postal region 7 with Kano, Jigawa and Gombe. Like several…
400001 is a code with history attached. Enugu was the capital of the old Eastern Region, so NIPOST numbered postal region 4 outward from here, and every code in Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Imo and Ebonyi still opens with a 4 because of it. Enugu State codes stop at 413111. That code is more significant than…
Tin mining brought a railway and a colonial administration to Jos decades before most northern towns were planned, and the city still has the named roads and numbered plots to show for it. Plateau State codes open 93, run to 942105, and 930001 is the head office code. Plateau sits in postal region 9 with…
Ask anyone in Imo State where they are from and the answer is Owerri, Orlu or Okigwe. Those three zones are not just political shorthand, they map onto how post is sorted, which makes this an easier state to address than 27 local governments would suggest. 460001 is the Owerri head office code; the range…
